剧情梗概：
　　纽约青年警官伊奇博德-克瑞恩自以为是纽约首屈一指的警探，对他不以为然的年长警官们搬出了悬而未结的睡谷无头骑士案措其锐气：除非克瑞恩能将睡谷无头骑士凶杀案查个水落石出，并使凶杀案不再发生，否则其“纽约神探”的称号便名不符实。在众人的激将下，克瑞恩开始向传说中无头骑士经常出没的睡谷进发。
　　据说无头骑士在美国南北内战时曾是一名骁勇善战的骑士，一次战役中不幸被敌方割去头颅。之后，他的孤魂飘落到了睡谷一带，在月黑风高之夜，他会骑着快马、拿着大斧将经过此地的行人的头颅割下。由于越来越多的人神秘失踪后又被发觉身首异处，睡谷一带开始被称为遍布血腥的“恐怖之谷”。
　　克瑞恩的到来受到了村民们的欢迎。首富凡-塔赛尔之女卡翠娜对克瑞恩心生爱慕。然而，一向暗恋卡翠娜的青年布罗姆以及卡翠娜的年轻继母却感到极度不安，两人从不同程度上对克瑞恩的侦察行动施以阻力。克瑞恩选择了一位与无头骑士有杀父之仇的年轻人马克作为自己的助手，然而，事情却并非他想像的那样简单……
